Communities Service
The Service education programme at Shrewsbury School Hong Kong supports the delivery of our Global Citizenship and Intercultural Learning framework, with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 17 (Partnership) identified as a common central focus. It is designed to challenge, engage, affect and inspire our young students and offered in collaboration with four locally-based charitable partners.
Identified themes of study connect us directly to the work of a regionally based charity able to guide engagement and endeavour through five phases of exploration.
A Structured Journey of Engagement
The Service education programme is built around a five-phase model that encourages reflection, active participation, and student leadership. Each stage gives students the opportunity to connect classroom learning with purposeful action:
The Challenge
Students begin by identifying a central theme of study. This could be linked to issues such as poverty, environmental sustainability, or social inclusion.
Our Partner
Shrewsbury Hong Kong works closely with a regionally based charity that specialises in the chosen theme. These organisations guide students in understanding the complexities of the issue and shaping an effective response.
First Action
Guided by our partner charity, students contribute their time, skills, and energy to support a meaningful project. This might involve volunteering, participating in awareness campaigns, or providing practical assistance.
Reflection
Students are encouraged to pause and reflect on their experience, considering the impact of their actions and how their perspectives on global issues have evolved.
Student-Led Action
The final stage empowers students to take the lead by designing and delivering their own initiatives in support of their assigned partner. This phase nurtures creativity, leadership, and empathy while strengthening the connection between the school and the wider community.
