Chinese Language & Culture
Why Learn Chinese?
Shrewsbury students engage with the Chinese language every day. With more native speakers than any other language in the world, we teach Mandarin (Putonghua) and most commonly use simplified written characters.
Our Bespoke Chinese Language Programme
The delivery of a tailored programme for Chinese language and culture lies at the heart of our efforts to ensure students develop a rounded, respectful, and appreciative view of the world. Chinese lessons focus on regular rehearsal and practical application. We use a broad range of stimulating resources and encourage exploration to build linguistic confidence in every student. Historical study enriches and deepens understanding.
Early Years Chinese Language Learning
Chinese language learning within Early Years classes follows the principles of the Early Years Foundation Stage framework. Sessions complement classroom themes, follow student interests, and are driven by the power of play.
Primary School: Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced Classes
Foundation, Intermediate, and Advanced classes run simultaneously within the Primary School to ensure prior experience is recognised and utilised. The Foundation programme lasts for 2 years, while the Intermediate programme spans 4 to 6 years. Both follow a thematic cycle integrating Chinese culture, history, and geography. Most Foundation and Intermediate students progress towards Foreign Language iGCSE entry.
Advanced Chinese Language Learning
Advanced language learning is a lifelong journey. Our programme supports growing fluency and complex cultural understanding while fostering fascination and ambition. Approximately 70% of content focuses on Chinese literacy (reading, writing, vocabulary), using text samples from Yuwen (People’s Education Press). The remaining 30% emphasises thematic application, aiding contextualisation and extension. Advanced classes group students by iGCSE trajectory (First or Second Language paper entry).
Co-Curricular Chinese Opportunities
Our Co-Curricular programme allows students to extend and contextualise their learning. The strength of our programme is evidenced by graduates attending some of the region’s most esteemed bilingual schools.
