Chinese Language & Culture
Why Learn Chinese?
Learning Chinese opens the door to meaningful communication, cultural understanding, and future opportunities. At Shrewsbury Hong Kong, students engage with the Chinese language every day. Mandarin (Putonghua) is taught using simplified characters, helping students connect with the world’s most widely spoken language and its rich cultural heritage.
A Bespoke Programme for Every Student
Our Chinese Language and Culture Programme is tailored to help students develop a respectful, well-rounded view of the world. Lessons focus on rehearsal, practical application, and exploration. We use a wide range of engaging resources to build linguistic confidence, while historical study deepens cultural appreciation.
Early Years Chinese Learning
In the Early Years, Chinese language sessions are guided by the Early Years Foundation Stage framework. Learning is interwoven into classroom themes, shaped by student interests, and the power of play.
Primary School Pathways
To ensure every students’ Chinese Language learning journey is individualised, we offer Foundation, Intermediate, and Advanced classes within the Primary School.
- Foundation Programme: A 2-year pathway introducing Mandarin through themed cycles of language and culture.
- Intermediate Programme: A 4-6 year pathway that integrates history, geography, and cultural study, building the foundations towards eventual Foreign Language iGCSE entry.
- Advanced Programme: Focused on building fluency and cultural depth, with around 70% of lessons dedicated to literacy skills (reading, writing, vocabulary) using Yuwen (People’s Education Press) texts. The remaining 30% complements classroom themes and applies learning to real-world contexts. Advanced students are grouped in accordance with the GCSE trajectory, preparing for either First or Second Language entry.
Co-Curricular Chinese Language Opportunities
Beyond the classroom, students can extend their learning through a wide range of co-curricular activities. These opportunities encourage authentic application of linguistic skills and cultural immersion. The strength of this pathway is reflected in our graduates, many of whom progress to prestigious bilingual schools across the region.
