5 Ways to Support Phonics Learning at Home

A strong home-school partnership is key to mastering foundational skills like phonics. Drawing from a recent workshop for parents by Sam Taborn, here are five clear strategies to support your child’s phonics journey at home.

Shrewsbury Parent workshop Sam Taborn

Build on Known Sounds

Think of reading like building a house—one sound is one brick.

  • Do: Let your child read books that only use sounds they already know. This builds confidence.
  • Don’t: Introduce books with many new sounds, as this can cause frustration.
  • Celebrate their effort in blending known sounds, not just getting words right.

Use Pure Sounds

Clear sounds are crucial for blending words correctly.

  • What it is: Pronounce letter sounds without adding an “uh” (e.g., say ‘mmm’, not ‘muh’; ‘sss’, not ‘suh’).
  • Why it works: It makes blending smooth (c-a-t becomes “cat,” not “cuh-a-tuh”).
  • How to help: Gently model the pure sound if you hear your child add an extra syllable.

Weave Phonics into Daily Life

No special tools are needed—use your everyday environment.

  • Play Sound Detective: Spot sounds on signs, packaging, or in ‘I Spy’.
  • Use Fred Talk: Break down everyday words into sounds during play or chores (e.g., “Pass me the a-pp-le”).
  • This makes learning constant, fun, and relevant.

Guide, Don’t Teach, During Reading

Your role is to encourage, not to introduce new rules. If your child is stuck, use this simple prompt sequence:

  • Special Friends: “What special sound does ‘sh’ make?”
  • Fred Talk: “Can you sound it out?”
  • Blend: “Now blend the sounds together.”
  • Understand: Ask a question about what they just read to check comprehension.

Apply Phonics to Writing

Phonics empowers children to write ideas down confidently.

  • Encourage segmenting: Help them break words into sounds (e.g., ship -> sh-i-p).
  • Praise phonetic spelling: Celebrate their attempts to write words based on sounds. This freedom is key to building a love for writing.
