Shrewsbury Hosts Engaging STEAM Expo, Showcasing Design Thinking in Action
This month, Shrewsbury International School Hong Kong was abuzz with innovation and community spirit as we proudly hosted our annual STEAM Expo. Designed as a vibrant community event, the expo provided a compelling platform for our students to articulate their learning journeys, demonstrating how the ‘Design Thinking’ process translates into meaningful, real-world project work.
The expo was expertly structured around four large display boards, each curated by a different class and each dedicated to a distinct phase of the Design Thinking methodology: Empathise, Define, Ideate, and Prototype. This clear, staged presentation offered visitors a valuable insight into the comprehensive and iterative process that underpins all STEAM learning at Shrewsbury.

Year 4’s Comparative Engineering: Bridges that Connect
Our Year 4 students captivated attendees with a fascinating comparative study of two iconic structures: the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Hong Kong’s own Tseung Kwan O (TKO) Cross Bay Link Bridge. Moving beyond simple facts, the students employed the Design Thinking framework to analyse the engineering challenges, material choices, and societal impact of each bridge within its unique geographical and historical context.
The highlight was an interactive testing demonstration, where students presented their own bridge prototypes. This hands-on element allowed visitors to see the principles of load distribution and structural integrity in action, perfectly illustrating the ‘Prototype’ and ‘Test’ stages of their learning cycle.

Year 5’s Empathetic Inquiry: Addressing Senior Loneliness
Demonstrating the profound ‘human’ element within STEAM, our Year 5 pupils presented a deeply considered project focused on the theme of senior loneliness. Beginning with the ‘Empathise’ stage, students conducted thoughtful research to understand the nuances of this community issue. Their display boards charted the journey from defining specific problems to ideating compassionate, technological, and social solutions aimed at fostering connection and support for the elderly.
Adding a powerful, multi-media dimension to their findings, Year 5 also screened a sensitively crafted video. This film featured interviews, student reflections, and their proposed initiatives, ensuring the subject matter resonated deeply with expo attendees and showcased the students’ communication skills.

A Community Event Designed for Engagement
True to our school’s ethos, the expo was conceived as an engaging community dialogue. Visitors were not merely passive observers; they were encouraged to interact with student guides, ask probing questions, and delve deeper into the projects. Each display board featured QR codes linked directly to the students’ e-portfolios, allowing for immediate access to a richer repository of their research notes, design sketches, and reflective commentaries.
The Shrewsbury Hong Kong STEAM Expo successfully underscored how a structured, creative process like Design Thinking empowers students to tackle diverse challenges—from civil engineering to social wellbeing. It was a superb celebration of curiosity, academic rigour, and the desire to make a positive contribution, reaffirming our commitment to nurturing insightful and innovative learners.
