Subject strands and objectives are carefully woven together to create immersive and interconnected units of learning. Five units are studied during each academic year.

LEARNING IN THE EARLY YEARS

The curriculum within EY classes is shaped by the Early Years and Foundation Stage framework. An integrated programme of learning and care, it is founded upon a series of developmental markers and split into Prime and Specific areas.

prime areas
Critical to the development of the whole child, Prime Areas form a significant focus of early childhood development. Within this area, children learn about:

Personal, Social & Emotional Development:
Children develop confidence and self-assurance. They learn how to share and take turns, discovering how to manage their feelings and behaviour.

Physical Development
Children develop coordination, control, manipulation and movement. They grow in confidence and activity, developing self help skills and greater independence.

Communication & Language
Children develop listening skills and increase their vocabulary, articulation and fluency. They learn to communicate verbally and non-verbally in order to successfully develop positive relationships.

specific areaS
More familiar to many parents, specific areas shape the academic interests of children as they move through the Early Years. Within this area, children learn about:
Literacy
Children will be exposed to a wide range of books, introduced to letter sounds and begin emergent writing.
Maths
Children will match, count, sort, spot patterns, make connections, recognise relationships and work with numbers, shapes and measures. They develop mathematical understanding through stories, songs, games and imaginative play.
Expressive Arts & Design:
Children create and explore in order to make connections between one area of learning and another and so extend their understanding. This area encompasses music, art, dance, role play and imaginative play.
Understanding the World:
Children will begin to develop the crucial knowledge, skills and understanding to help them comprehend the world around them. This forms the foundation for subjects of Science, Geography, History, Design and Technology and Computing taught through the Primary years.

Chinese

Shrewsbury International School Hong Kong takes the learning of language seriously. Chinese is taught to every child every day.

In recognition that our students bring with them a range of different experiences, we have tailored our curriculum accordingly. With our specialist teaching team delivering programmes to Advanced, Intermediate and Foundation groups, every child has the opportunity to develop their reading, writing, speaking and listening at an appropriate pace and level.

The learning of language carries tremendous benefits in developing communication skills and confidence in speaking, as well as cultural awareness.
